introduction

 

My name is Cayla, I'm Unangax or more commonly known as Aleut. I grew up in the Aleutian islands, all of my life. There is where I was taught how to hunt, fish, and take care of the land. I have many siblings, nieces and nephews, aunties and uncles. I learned how to do beading when I was around twelve years old and then continued to start my own small business selling my beadwork and traditional clothing. I've done traditional Dancing off and on for years now. This is my second year in college, I took a year off after I had my Daughter to adjust to being a young mother I am taking 14-16 credits a semester along with working full time to try and graduate early. My relationship with art I don't think to be well-rounded. I think I know a lot about Alaska native art others not so much. I do enjoy going to art museums and being able to interpret the art in my own way.

    Wow! That's a heavy load. I adore beadwork and have tried my hand at various techniques. Interesting painting. It looks like it from the West Coast of Africa.

    I definitely know what it's like to have a lot of aunts, uncles, and cousins. In small towns in Hawaii someone ends up being related to you one way or another, which can be fun, but weird in some situations haha. It must be difficult trying to balance being a parent and a full time college student at the same time. Good on you though, I don't think I'd be able to do that.

  This was made by Reginal Pilawuk Wilson. It's called " Wupun, " which translates to Sun Mat. It was made in 2014. This is made out of Pandanus, palm trees, and all-natural dyes. In many cultures, the sun holds significant meaning to people. I need help finding something specifically that is important to the Ngan'gikurrunggurr people. However, the symmetry in this piece leads me to believe that this person has been weaving for a very long time. This design/ pattern is specific to the tribe it comes from and the artist who made it. I found the deep and rich colors to be fascinating, especially because they died with natural things they could find in their lands. The color transition in the weaving is flawless. Art Analysis of Sesshu's Winter landscape.

  Sesshu's Winter Landscape The artwork above was made by Sesshu Toyo, a Monk who practiced strictly with Sumi-e or ink painting. He would make the ink with soot and resin; this practice was said to have tried to use the least number of strokes as possible. Sesshu made this painting in the 1470s somewhere in the old providences of Japan.  I chose this piece of art for my analysis because I enjoy the hills/ Mountains with snow; they remind me of where I'm from. Sesshu's work in this piece showed Contrast, Line, and Values. He uses Contrast by his ability to use black and white to put an emphasis on how rough the winter was. He uses his line work in jagged patterns throughout his ink painting. I think this was his way of depicting the ice. He uses his values to give a sense of weight to the winter as if it; 's long and cold but seems to be never-ending.
