Preferences and perspectives - The Romantic Era

The Romantic Era happened around the 19th century and was Characterized by a variety of styles. I will be comparing art from the Romanticism and Gothic Revival styles. Something to keep in mind is that the Romanticism style emphasized the individuals and it celebrated the natural world. Romanticism emphasizes emotion. The gothic revival was vastly different from the previously popular styles. Many artists got their inspiration from classical forms of ancient Greece and Rome. This is Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich. This painting is a part of the Romanticism style. He made it in 1818; where the painting was physically painted is unknown. There was speculation that the painting may have been made in 1817, but was proven to be painted in 1818. It is currently on display in Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany.
