Traditional Brazilin art Coming back to life

Image
This was made by Reginal Pilawuk Wilson. It's called " Wupun, " which translates to Sun Mat. It was made in 2014. This is made out of Pandanus, palm trees, and all-natural dyes. In many cultures, the sun holds significant meaning to people. I need help finding something specifically that is important to the Ngan'gikurrunggurr people. However, the symmetry in this piece leads me to believe that this person has been weaving for a very long time. This design/ pattern is specific to the tribe it comes from and the artist who made it. I found the deep and rich colors to be fascinating, especially because they died with natural things they could find in their lands. The color transition in the weaving is flawless. It flows together very well.       I would personally like to own one of these. However, there is a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appreciation. I found this design so interesting because, in my culture, we, too, have sun designs that...

The good, The bad, and those who are gone.

Swamp Patrol 1966 by Roger Blum Roger Blum was a part of the Vietnam Combat Art Program; this program was created to document the war in Vietnam from the eyes of the soldiers. This program allowed the artist to travel through Vietnam without any travel restrictions and with an unlimited creative license. The Painting shows a group of soldiers on patrol in a swampy area, with one soldier in the foreground looking out into the distance. This painting is known best for its dramatic lighting. I personally think that the lighting adds to the intensity of the painting. It adds a feeling of anxiety from not knowing what's up ahead or what's to come. The colors and shading in this piece also allow the mind to feel the muggy air and squishy swamp as they trek forward.  These pieces are all from the mid-modern era of soldiers who participated in this program. This painting shows true anxiety. I would own this painting. I think there is beauty in the balance of things a raw feeli...

Early Modern art- WW1

Image
This is Dead Germans in a Trench. It was made by William Orpen in 1918. The location where it was painted is still being determined, but the painting was from England, so there is a possibility this might be made there. This was made during WWI. The painting shows two dead German soldiers, one lying on its back and the other on its stomach.       The Germans have their faces painted to look like they are decomposing or starting the process, suggesting they have been there for a while. This era was heavily impacted by the war; it was one of the starting blocks for the other harmful things of its time. WWI had a bigger impact because it led to the Great Depression.       The painting was first displayed in London in May 1918 after the initial decision of the military Censor Arthur Lee. The painting has a nice contrast of colors. Along with the background line work, the painting does a good job of shading and highli...

Preferences and perspectives - The Romantic Era

Image
The Romantic Era happened around the 19th century and was Characterized by a variety of styles. I will be comparing art from the Romanticism and Gothic Revival styles. Something to keep in mind is that the Romanticism style emphasized the individuals and it celebrated the natural world. Romanticism emphasizes emotion.  The gothic revival was vastly different from the previously popular styles. Many artists got their inspiration from classical forms of ancient Greece and Rome.   This is Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich. This painting is a part of the Romanticism style. He made it in 1818; where the painting was physically painted is unknown. There was speculation that the painting may have been made in 1817, but was proven to be painted in 1818.  It is currently on display in Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany.  The painting uses lighting and shadows to create a sense of mystery, with the man standing in stark contrast to the la...

Morality and the Art of the Classical era.

Image
I chose the Morality and the Art of the Classical era. This first piece here off to the left, is called The Swing this painting was made in 1767 by   Jean-HonorĂ© Fragonard. He crafted this painted in Londe n. I feel these paintings all demonstrate the era I picked because of their style and coloring. The Woman is placed in such a way that shows the motion of the swing so you can physically play it out as if she were there in real-time. The Artist's choice of background color makes the peachy pink dress pop out even more from the bushes. She is used as a tease to a younger man depicted in this painting. His line work in the painting also causes everything to be more life-like. I would own a copy of this painting I find it whimsical. The next painting I have chosen is called Diana and Cupid it was made by Pompeo Batoni  in 1761. He made this painting in Italy. Diana in this painting is seen taking the bow from Cupid so that Cupid is forced to take a brake. We also can...

St. Peters Basilica  I chose St. Peter Basilica. It's located in Vatican City and was finished in 1626. The Original design was central. However, things were added making the new shape a rectangle; Michelangelo then changed it again to support the dome. St. Peters Basilica reflects Symmetry, Proportion, and Balance. The Dome is decorated with Mosaics and Inscriptions. The crown exhibits balance with its measurements and windows. The diameter is 42 meters, the height is 136 meters, and it has 16 windows. Something I really like about the dome is how it has so many even numbers. The facade has two levels of columns that support a triangular pediment. This was designed by Carlo Maderno. The pieta is in St. Peter's Basilica; Michelangelo made a sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus' dead body. St. Peters Basilica was influenced by the Council of Trent because the Council of Trent suggested using a Longitudinal structure in churches. I would like to take a picture of the...

Italian and Northern Renaissance

Image
The Virgin and Child with the infant St. John the Baptist This painting is by Sandro Botticelli around 1490- 1500. The specific date is unknown. They now keep the painting in Museo De Arte De Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo Brazil. Sandro Botticelli was born in 1445 and died in 1510 his style was early Renaissance, and he went to school at Florentine School. Something I thought had a huge impact on the peace is the element of color. I couldn't imagine the piece in black in white, could you? They would still be able to have the contrast of the woman's grace. The color brings the woman to life in the painting making her seem alive yet frozen in time. The linework he used to make it so the painting would have a dainty touch. If the lines were harsh, she wouldn't nearly seem to have as much grace and poise as she does in this painting. The painting also has geometric shapes in the background I believe, for contrast. The painting as you can tell by the title is related to the reinventio...
